Opener Electrical Faults
When the Door Is Not the Problem
A garage door opener is a small motor, a logic board, a light and two safety sensors. It is unusual among household appliances in that it announces electrical trouble by behaving mechanically. It stops halfway. It runs slowly. It reverses for no visible reason. The light dims as the motor starts.
Homeowners read all of that as a door fault and call us. Often it is. Increasingly, since chargers started appearing in garages, it is not.
What We Can and Cannot Do
We are garage door specialists. We do not test or alter circuits, we do not size breakers, we do not open panels and we do not work on chargers. Any of that is licensed electrical work.
What we can do is eliminate the door completely, which is the half nobody else can do, and it saves an electrician an hour of guessing.
Ruling the Door Out
An opener that is fighting a badly balanced door draws far more current than one that is not, and that alone can push an already loaded circuit over the edge. So the honest first question is never electrical.
- Disconnect the opener at the emergency release and lift the door by hand.
- Balance test. Raise it to about halfway and let go. A correctly counterbalanced door stays roughly where it is. If it drops or shoots up, the springs are wrong and the opener has been compensating, possibly for years.
- Roll test. With the opener disconnected, the door should run through its travel with light steady effort. Binding, grinding or a tight spot means track, rollers or a bent section.
- Cycle current sanity. A healthy unit runs a full open and close without labouring, without the light browning out and without the motor sounding like it is under strain at the same point every time.
- Sensor check. Steady indicator lights at both photo eyes through the whole travel. A flickering light is an alignment or wiring fault, not a supply fault.
If the springs are right, the door rolls freely and the sensors are steady, the mechanical side is clear. We write that down and you hand it to your electrician.
Patterns We See in Older Garages
Plenty of houses around Huntington Beach were built when a garage got one lighting circuit and, if you were lucky, one convenience outlet. The opener was added later and plugged into whatever was already there.
That circuit then acquired a second fridge, a freezer, a compressor, a workbench, and now a charger nearby. Motors draw a large surge on starting. Two motors starting near each other on a tired circuit produce exactly the symptoms above.
Two more things come up often enough to mention. A GFCI protected outlet can trip on nuisance rather than on a real fault, and when it does the opener simply goes dead with no other symptom, which sends people looking at the door. And a new circuit run near the opener’s low voltage sensor wiring can, if the wiring is old and its insulation is tired, cause intermittent sensor behaviour. In both cases the fix is electrical, and in both cases we can tell you that the mechanism is fine.
The Battery Backup Point
California SB-969 has required a battery backup on residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state since July 2019. It came out of people being unable to get cars out of garages during power shutoffs.
If the opener is older than that and it is already misbehaving, replacing it while the electrician is on site is often the sensible order of work. A door that will not open during an outage is a bigger problem in a household whose only car needs the garage to charge.
